Community Voice & Digital Strategy: Cambodian Society of Rhode Island

I lead the organization’s external narrative and digital presence. My work focuses on transforming community and cultural preservation initiatives into compelling digital stories that drive engagement, share culture, and increase program attendance. This helps a once endangered culture and language regain its traction and relevance within our intergenerational community in the most accessible and easily digestible way possible.

Role: Director of Communications & Marketing

Socials & Website Management

I direct our Meta (Instagram & Facebook) platforms and our website, ensuring a consistent brand voice that is culturally responsive and accessible to our diverse audience.

Strategic Storytelling

I bridge the gap between grassroots organizing and professional media production, utilizing my background in photography and film to amplify the voices of our community members.

Marketing & Sponsorships

I lead comprehensive marketing efforts for our flagship events, including the Khmer New Year. This includes direct outreach to vendors and securing corporate and local sponsors to ensure program sustainability.

Modernization & Youth Outreach

To combat declining attendance among our youth, I created a "Digital-First" strategy. By moving toward short-form content and digitizing our assets we have increased youth attendance and volunteer sign-ups.

Summary of Projects & Solutions

  • I lead the external voice and digital strategy for the Cambodian Society of Rhode Island, utilizing my professional background in photography and film to amplify the lived experiences of our community. My work transforms cultural initiatives into compelling, multi-channel narratives that bridge the gap between our refugee history and our future in the 21st century.

    • Creative Direction & Narrative Strategy: I produce high-quality cinematic and photographic content that captures the essence of the RI Khmer community. This artistic approach has humanized our mission, resulting in significant increases in community visibility and engagement across digital platforms.

    • Integrated Brand Leadership: I manage all marketing and fundraising materials for major cultural celebrations, ensuring a consistent brand voice. By prioritizing high-quality visual representation, I’ve elevated the professional profile of our organization to secure corporate sponsorships and long-term donor support.

    • Impact-Driven Digital Outreach: I design and execute targeted social media campaigns that go beyond information sharing to focus on community storytelling. This strategy has successfully expanded our reach to a broader, more diverse audience while deepening our connection with long-standing members.

    • Media Production & Archival Growth: I leverage my expertise in lens-based media to document our flagship events—including the Khmer New Year—creating a visual archive that serves as both a marketing asset and a vital record of our community’s cultural evolution.

  • As a leader at the Cambodian Society of Rhode Island, I bridge the gap between our organization’s foundational roots and the needs of a modern, multi-generational community. My work focuses on honoring the legacy of our refugee founders by ensuring our systems are sustainable, inclusive, and accessible.

    • Community Accessibility: Modernized the ticketing process for our flagship Khmer New Year celebration by implementing digital platforms (Eventbrite). This transition removed barriers to entry, resulting in increased attendance and a more seamless experience for community members.

    • Next-Gen Engagement: Revitalized volunteer recruitment by leveraging social media and cloud-based collaboration tools. By meeting the younger generation where they are, I have successfully expanded our volunteer base and fostered deeper civic engagement among Khmer youth.

    • Strategic Partnerships & Sustainability: Lead comprehensive outreach to secure corporate and local sponsorships. I designed streamlined vendor and sponsor management systems that empower local businesses to support our cultural programs effectively, ensuring the long-term financial health of our events.

    • Organizational Resilience: Transitioned legacy 1980s-era systems into integrated digital solutions (Google Workspace). This shift ensures that the vital cultural work of our founders is preserved and easily managed by future community leaders.

  • Part of my role at the Cambodian Society of Rhode Island is to transition old systems created by our refugee founders from the 1980s into digital solutions for the 21st century. My modernization projects include:

    • Digitizing our ticketing system for our annual Cambodian New Year event for easier and increased ticket sales (Eventbrite, Google Sheets)

    • Simplifying & digitizing volunteer recruitment and onboarding to reach a broader, younger audience (Instagram, Google Forms, Google Docs, Zoom)

    • Revitalizing & digitizing our sponsorship & vendor recruitment & management systems (Google Forms, Google Sheets, Google Docs)

  • I manage the Cambodian Society of Rhode Island’s primary digital footprints, including our website and Meta platforms (Instagram & Facebook). My approach balances technical efficiency with a culturally responsive brand voice, ensuring our digital presence is an accessible resource for a diverse, multi-generational audience.

    • Digital Ecosystem Management: I oversee the continuous development and maintenance of our organization’s website, optimizing for both user experience and accessibility. By implementing a clear information hierarchy, I’ve transformed the site into a vital hub for community resources, event updates, and historical archives.

    • Culturally Responsive Social Media: I lead our strategy across Instagram and Facebook, crafting content that resonates with both our Khmer-speaking elders and our English-speaking youth. This includes using inclusive language and visual storytelling to foster a sense of belonging and community pride.

    • Brand Consistency & Visual Integrity: I ensure a unified aesthetic and voice across all digital platforms. By aligning our social media storytelling with our organizational mission, I have increased follower engagement and streamlined how we communicate urgent community news and cultural initiatives.

    • Data-Informed Outreach: I utilize platform analytics to refine our digital strategy, ensuring our outreach efforts are reaching key demographics. This data-driven approach has directly contributed to higher digital participation rates for our flagship programs and fundraising campaigns.

  • "I highly recommend Kannetha Brown as a strong candidate for any communications-based position. She is exceptionally creative, dedicated, and consistently takes the initiative to develop thoughtful and engaging social media content. Her strong aesthetic sensibilities have been an invaluable asset to our organization, and I am confident in her ability to adapt and thrive in a wide range of professional settings."
