AS220 presents a selection of photographs from Brown’s series Two Oceans. Working with an 8 x10 view camera and black and white film, Brown made portraits of the families, friends, and individuals within her circle of Asian Americans and their parents. Providence, Rhode Island and its neighboring cities are home to a large Southeast Asian population, mostly Cambodians– many of whom share ties with her mother, a locally-known nurse practitioner who was born in Cambodia. Being from the smallest state, each of Brown’s sitters are uniquely interconnected. In this thoughtful documentary series, Brown shares an intimate look into the distinct closeness and pride within her community, as well as the complexities of being from two places at once.
